I don’t think it is a coincidence that this game was released just before the movie Sinners, which is also an exploration in the southern, creole mysticism of the black American culture. The heaviest part of Sinners, outside of the vampires, was the use of hoodoo by the character Annie to protect them from whatever evil awaited them. (They did not yet know it was vampires. In fact, they thought it was Haints, which is incredibly well used in South of Midnight.) Anyone who plays this game is going to learn about Haints, about Seers, and other lore of those who practice the spiritual arts. 

This game is more linear than it is open world, and the story is a good one and an important one to the game. One of the most striking things about it, is though there are characters of all races, this is a uniquely black game. It was one of the only ones I can think of that caters to the black American experience specifically. There are not very many black games, and of the ones that do exist they can often be attributed to black culture throughout the disapora – like Assasins’ Creed: Origins which is based on ancient Egypt. However, this a black American game. In other words, the story that plays out is specific to black American culture and that is super important since we have very few games that are this specific.
